　　May 14 the weekly figures issued by Houston-based oilfield services firm Baker Hughes showed that the number of operating drilling rigs in the United States climbed five to 453 rigs in the present week, a rise by 114 annually.

　　These operating drilling rigs comprised 352 oil rigs functioning in the U.S. oil fields, a rise by eight from the prior week; 100 gas drilling rigs, a drop by three from the prior week; and one miscellaneous rigs, a decrease by one from the past week.

　　The 453 rigs comprised 437 land drilling rigs, a rise by three from the past week; one inland water rig, unaffected from the past week; and 15 offshore drilling rigs, a rise by two from the past week.

　　Amongst them, 410 are horizontal drilling rigs, 15 are vertical drilling rigs and 28 are directional drilling rigs.
