GS Caltex and KOGAS join in on liquid hydrogen project
South Korea’s refiner GS Caltex and South Korea’s LNG importing giant Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for liquid hydrogen production and supply value chain.
The companies are planning to launch production and supply of liquefied hydrogen by recycling liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy.
A liquid hydrogen mega station with a production capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year will supply liquid hydrogen to the Seoul metropolitan area and the country’s central region in the future.
Hydrogen will be extracted from LNG, converted into liquid hydrogen and stored by utilising LNG cold energy. It will be supplied to liquefied hydrogen charging stations in the metropolitan area using tank lorries. Liquefied hydrogen is easier to store and transport due to its volume reduced to 800th compared to gas.
The hydrogen station is scheduled to be completed in December 2024.
In addition, the two companies decided to review the construction of hydrogen extraction facilities and the demonstration and commercialization of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies.
