Eurozone chems output up in May, overall industry hit by global shortages
The eurozone’s chemicals output rose in May by 1.0%, bucking the trend of average industrial production, the EU’s statistical office Eurostat said on Wednesday.
Industrial production in the 19-country eurozone fell in May, but the fall could have more to do with a normalisation in activity and shortages for key materials than a slowdown in consumer demand, according to analysts.
In chemicals, some major producing countries such as Germany posted healthy rises in output. Other large producers like Italy or Spain posted falls.
The petrochemicals hub of The Netherlands also posted a slight decrease in chemicals production.
In the wider, 27-country EU, overall chemicals output also rose, but the main producer in the eastern side of the EU, Poland, posted flat chemicals output in May.
